English
Springer Spaniels are a medium-sized sporting breed with a
docked tail. They are highly intelligent, active, and
people-oriented, making the Springer an ideal companion for
people in settings from urban to rural. Springers are
extremely affectionate, loyal dogs and require daily attention
from their human companions. To learn more about English

Advantages of Adoption
Would you like to own a
puppy? Often prospective dog-owners are drawn in by the
"cuteness" of a puppy, not realizing all the work
that accompanies puppy ownership. The time and energy
needed for cleaning up messes, obedience training,
housebreaking, exercising, etc. can sometimes overwhelm even the
most patient
dog owner. Many of our adoptive families have realized
the wisdom of adopting an older dog.
We
believe that there are several major advantages of adopting one
of our dogs:
- Many of our dogs may live with one of our experienced foster families for
a period of time, until we have formed an opinion as to
whether a particular dog is right for your family
- We
have a principle: Once a rescue dog, always a rescue dog.
That is, you can return a dog to us at any time if it
becomes unsuitable for your situation
- There
is no fee. We pay all medical and fostering costs until the
dog is yours (although you will be asked for a donation)
- All
are purebred (as far as we can tell) English Springer
Spaniels
- All
are neutered or spayed
Introduction to English
Springer Spaniel Club of Long Island - Rescue
The
English Springer Spaniel Club of Long Island was founded more
than 30 years ago; its Rescue program was started in 1988. We
are a group of unpaid volunteers from Maine to
Pennsylvania. Every year our organization places approximately
100 abused, abandoned or unwanted Springers into new homes. Some
of these purebred dogs come to us through local shelters; some
come to us due to the death of a former owner, divorce, a new
baby, move to a new house, small apartment, etc. We've even
heard of dogs who no longer fit into the family because the
decor
of the home was changed!
When we
find a Springer in an animal shelter, we bail it out, nurse it
back to health, clean it up, neuter it, give it its shots, and
live with it in one of our foster homes for a while to evaluate
it and allow it to get over the loss of its former owner, then
we place it with an appropriate family.
Occasionally, we find ourselves with a dog which is unadoptable
because of serious disease or incorrigible temperament. This is
a difficult judgment for us to make, but we are experienced in
making these evaluations, and we always reach a consensus.
Because of this process, you have a better chance of adopting
the right dog for you than you would with an ordinary animal
shelter.
Over the
years we have put hundreds of purebred English Springer Spaniels
into new homes, and in the process, we've met some of the NICEST
people! At any given time, there are approximately twenty to thirty dogs waiting for a new home -- perhaps
with you.
